In contemporary America, schoolchildren can be charged with battery for throwing a piece of candy at a friend or threatened with expulsion for making a “gun” gesture with their index finger. They can also be imprisoned for cutting class and placed in solitary confinement or made to share prison cells with hardened adult criminals. In the workplace, our jobs are more monotonous, repetitious and rule-ridden and less secure than ever before. We are made to answer to uncaring and even sadistic bosses, teachers and police, all of whom care much more about following rules than about helping people. Every year federal and state legislatures and bureaucracies pump out thousands of pages of new laws and regulations—enough to make every American into an accidental criminal. By and large, America's bureaucracies are plumbing the depths of mass insanity. In Bureaucratic Insanity, journalist and social critic Sean Kerrigan documents this disturbing trend toward absolutist and authoritarian behavior by dissecting the psychology of obsessive, rule-focused bureaucrats. He traces the development of bureaucracy from its origins in the early industrial revolution to the modern information age. He also examines ways of avoiding being victimized by bureaucracy gone mad.

Kerrigan writes in a very engaging manner, it reads like you are sitting with him discussing the flaws of society( which there are many). His points are well thought and encourage the reader to think which is needed for our country to reach it's full potential. We cannot continue being sheep waiting for slaughter, change begins with us.
I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

Bureaucratic Insanity The American Bureaucrat Descent into Madness edition by Sean Kerrigan Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

Absolutely must read for all working people who find themselves at the mercy of an anti-intellectual, anti-creative work place culture. Captures the psychopathology of the bureaucratic middle management who lack even a modicum of human understanding and thus crush all independence and creativity in the work place.
This book is scary true. I found it interesting and quite readable, although it is a bit hard to face the fact that the behavior we see everywhere these days is really not sane at all. A return to sanity at the moment seems doubtful since most of the symptoms of the insanity go unrecognized. This book does a good service in bringing to consciousness the reality of the situation our society is in.
I read it in 2 days and will probably have to go over again. Very helpful to treat institutionalized people like they have a mental illness instead of taking things personally, and try to avoid unnecessary interaction. Fun read.
From the beginning, S.J. Kerrigan takes you on an emotional ride through the overly bureaucratic way life modern life, giving voice to that nagging frustration in the back of your head every time you watch the news, go to work, or step outside. You'll find yourself frustrated and horrified through this amazingly well fashioned argument that gets to the very core of the underlying pathology hidden just beyond convention. A quick read and a powerful message, this is one of my top picks of the year!
A useful book in helping to understand the "minds" of the bureaucrats, of whom we are exposed to every day even if we don't know it. I recently had a runin with a USDA local bureaucrat, and the insights in this book helped me understand what would otherwise be far beyond my previous experience. Bureaucrats think (if you want to call it that) very differently from people who have to earn their livings. You can't reason with them, as they "go by the book" no matter how outdated their "book" happens to be. Logic doesn't work regarding them. And they sure as hell don't give a damn who they hurt! This bitch demanded a $101,735.44 "penalty" to be paid within a week; later admitted she had had no such authority to do anything like this; but never, never apologized in the least--always going back to some 23 year old signed paragraph, totally inapplicable to the present situation. Without the insights provided by this book, I would have taken this business just referred to personally, and might have thought of blowing her to hell.
Superb book! Scary outlook when you correlate todays mindless bureaucratic trends with what happened during and after the Russian revolution in 1918. I guess you hear so little about that because they want to try it again. Scary similarities. Same BS just 100 years later. Same "logic" - same arguments or propaganda - same "better" world. Dictatorial power is best applied by mindless minions behind a desk following orders.
Whether it's communists, nazies or the brave new world planned for us - they all use the same principles.
A substantive look at the failure of our society to allow human discretion to play a greater role in our bureaucracies and in various facets of public behavior. This really gets to the root of a mentality where everything is presumed to be according to the instituted rules or repeated often and loud by authorities. Ironically, the author points out that as people lose their sense of agency within mechanistic, inhumane organizations, the more people we have with 'lose screws' who are so ready to turn and rend each other. I think Mr. Kerrigan just put his fingers directly over the pulse of a sick society.
