Many of our authors arrive in the United States as refugees seeking a safe place to live and prosper. Others arrive as immigrants and by means of a variety of visas. Esl students come to Bctc in search of a better life, education and opportunity. These authors are from 28 countries around the world. We are pleased and honored to share their words telling about struggles they have gone through to get this far and their dreams for the future.

The people who wrote the true stories in this book have come from all over the world. They happened to be in the same English As A Second Language (or ESL) class, and the book is a result of class assignments. Their stories tell of danger and extreme hardship, and sometimes they are hard to learn about, because they tell of terrible situations and experiences. This can be emotionally difficult to read; but these are real people who lived these real stories, told simply with the words of their new language. Editing was deliberately light, so variations in use of words will be apparent.This book is valuable because it preserves the first person memories of such a diverse group of immigrants, refugees and other international students, each on a journey toward a better life. The stories tell of the courage, sustained effort and hope -- sometimes through YEARS of hardship -- experienced by the writers.
